Baku and Minsk expand military cooperation - EXCLUSIVE

Specialist view

A- A A+
Yesterday the future of the Azerbaijani-Belarusian relations was discussed in Minsk. Azerbaijani Defense Minister Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov met with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. The conversation on bilateral cooperation went well beyond the military-technical sphere. The positions of the countries coincide in many respects.

Azerbaijan is an important trade partner of Belarus in Transcaucasia. Over the past 10 years, the total turnover has increased from $ 30 million to $ 300. The pace of cooperation is supported by personal meetings. Since 2006, they keep the rhythm - every three years they exchange visits. And always the leaders of the countries meet as friends.

The basis of Belarusian exports last year was made up of tractors, oil products, timber, medicines, and dairy products. The Belarusian economy attracted investments by almost $ 7.5 million. In Azerbaijan there are 4 Belarusian shops, as well as more than 70 representative offices, subsidiaries and distributors of Belarusian enterprises. The assembly production of MTZ tractors, MAZ and MZKT vehicles on the basis of the Ganja Automobile Plant was created.

"The Belarusian side traditionally emphasizes the importance of cooperation between the two states."

The Belarusian military expert Sergey Martselev told Eurasia Diary about this, commenting on the results of the visit of the Azerbaijani Defense Minister to Belarus.

The official head of Belarus noted the successful cooperation with Azerbaijan in the military-technical sphere, said that "no international treaty is violated" and "we are ready, if we can do something for Azerbaijan, we are ready to do this so that your people live in safety, so that the state develops."

According to the expert, undoubtedly, such reservations by Alexander Lukashenko are addressed to those who criticize cooperation with official Baku, which is in confrontation with Armenia because of Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia, in turn, like Belarus is in the military-political bloc of the CSTO.

"Zakir Hasanov appreciated the quality of the Belarusian weapons, assured the host of the sympathy of the Azerbaijani people to Belarus. In addition to mutual political reverence, official information about the visit is quite stingy. It is worth mentioning the announced meeting in near future of Lukashenka and Aliyev, as well as the speech of the Belarusian president "we continue our cooperation in the aviation technical sphere as well."

Taking into account the participation of the Baranovichi aircraft repair plant in the military exhibition Aqdec-2016, which took place in the capital of Azerbaijan, it can be assumed that the military department of this Transcaucasian republic is interested in Belarusian reconnaissance drones, possibly also in the modernization of the SS 25 attack aircraft, "said Sergey Martselev.
